Neumann M-150 vs. Microtech Gefell M296

I've got a 6'10" grand I need to mike and I wanted your thoughts on a pair of Neumann 150's... I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I'm not too wild about the M-150. It is significantly "brasher" sounding than the original, I mean way "brasher" sounding. If you're trying to get a Steinway to sound like a Yamaha for a rock track, I think it will work brilliantly... if you're trying to make a piano that is enveloping, like for a classical presentation, then I think they are quite the wrong tool for the job.

One of the things that made the original M-50's sound as good as they do are the nickel diaphragm capsules. Microtech Gefell/Neumann is the only company that still makes metal diaphragm capsules.

If you're dead set on Omni's I'd recommend the M-296... personally I've been using the cardioid's which are the M-295. -Fletcher
