It was the TapeOpCon 2003 in Portland, OR, or was it Portland, ME? Who can remember with all that PBR flowing. Anyway, we had heard of a German lad who was in attendance and holding court with all the hip designers explaining tubes, Telefunken, old drawings salvaged from some warehouse in Germany, blah blah, blah. So we kinda let our ear turn toward what this guy was talking about and, lo and behold, he really knew his shit. This "Gentle Ben" of a man with a thick German accent was Oliver Archut (Oliver is not a frail man by any means) of AMI TAB-Funkenwerk. When we met Oliver he was in Seattle, he's sinced moved operations from Seattle to some old abandoned schoolhouse in Kansas that he purchased on eBay... but that's a story for another time.... Fletcher started talking to Oliver and was very impressed with his knowledge of the old German audio gear (remember, Mercenary was once a vintage gear operation), specifically Telefunken V-series things. We had a nice dinner with Oliver and asked if he send us out some gear of his so we could check it out. Well, Oliver was not very quick to take us up on our offer, he had only sold direct up to this point, and was not really interested in dealing with "gear pimps". A few weeks later we received an email from him saying that after he checked out our website he was impressed with our lines, and our policies. Another couple weeks and a V71 DI showed up for us to check out. We could tell immediately that this was a quality, well-built piece of gear. After plugging a bass into it, we were sold. |
