Royer Labs R-121 Ribbon Microphone

This microphone probably requires no introduction... since Mercenary first introduced the R-121 in 2000 it has become the gold standard for recording guitars... especially "loud" guitars!! A couple neat things we've found about the R-121. The ribbon is set off center in the magnet structure so the "back" side [the side without the Royer logo] is a tad brighter than the "front" side of the mic which greatly increases the microphone's versatility [like most ribbon mics, the R-121 features a "figure 8" pickup pattern]. Able to handle quite a bit of level, we've also used R-121's in drum applications!! From Snare drum to overheads, High Hat and "close" mic Ride Cymbals [like a foot away from the cymbal's crown] we have achieved wonderful results. The R-121 has also handled vocal duties and often "first reach" status for percussion overdubs. If you don't already have one [or 6] it is probably time you considered adding one to your arsenal.

royer r-121 features
Engineers are increasingly seeking out ribbon microphones for their flat response and well balanced sound field. Royer Labs introduces the R-121; a modern ribbon microphone designed to meet the demands of today's studio environment.

Developments in magnetics, materials and mechanical construction have made the modern ribbon microphone possible. With sensitivity levels surpassing those of classic ribbons, the element's smooth frequency response and phase linearity make the R-121 ideally suited for digital recording. When used on vocals, guitar amps and acoustic instruments, the R-121 delivers natural tone with striking realism. The figure-8pattern delivers superb ambiance when used for room micing applications or orchestral and choral recordings.

The heart of the R-121 is its pure (99.99%), low mass, 2.5 micron thick aluminum ribbon. The R-121's ribbon transducer assembly incorporates rare earth Neodymium magnets in a specially designed flux-frame. This frame forms a powerful magnetic field while reducing unwanted stray magnetic radiation.
