The Pendulum ES-8 is a limiter that never pumps or breaths adversely.
I have never heard it adding any unwanted or unmusical compression artifacts. In my experience, the result of the ES8 is a higher fidelity gain reduction action, which is described in simpler terms, as a smoothing of transient information. Its compression effect is natural and non-fatiguing, no matter the application. I can only describe the "emotion" found in the sound/tone of Pendulum tube designs similar to "breathing in pure oxygen".
It is as pure and very musical without common side affects normally associated with tube circuits. When bringing up the output gain on the ES8, you are presented with all of your beautiful lower level detail and any compression achieved does not hinder frequency resolution/energy anywhere in the spectrum. This kind of compression treatment is perfect for the master buss, but it also excellent for limiting individual tracks during tracking, such as vocals, bass, horns, keys, etc....for "effortless" volume controlling that never "spits", or "grunts".
I have also found great results using the ES8 for various stereo sub groups inside the context of the mix down, so its not just a mastering dynamo, its a well rounded limiter that should cover some serious ground in your studio. Though the unit has a definite tone that I can described as "rich", and full, the bottom stays solid and clear, where other limiters, fold and crumble over three DB of compression. -A/B
