The output from a microphone is a rather low level which will require gain to bring it to the professional (+4) line level standard. This is generally accomplished by using a mic pre. There are all kinds of different tones and textures that are accomplished with these tools. There are "colored" pres, there are "transparent" pres there are "warm" pres and "clean" pres, all the sonic colors of the rainbow are represented in the various pres you will find in this section.

When you review this, please try not to fall into advertising traps. Not all tube based pres are "warm", many sound very "open". Not all solid state pres are "hard" sounding; many are very "smooth".
