We first met the people of Manley Labs in about 1990 or '91. I was out in helLA for some reason or another, and ended up
having dinner with my friend Toni, and her soon to be husband, Jack Joseph Puig. For some reason after dinner, we ended up at some "high end" HiFi show. I really had about as much interest in being there as I did to chew glass (but at least after this we were going to
go out to some cool club they knew), but that changed drastically, quickly.I saw a stand that had what looked like recording equipment. I didn't quite understand, so I took a closer look. Staring me in the face were a couple of equalizers called "enhanced Pultecs", and a butt ugly black faced compressor with a pair of VU meters sticking out of it called a 'Dual Electro-Optical Limiter'. I became rather interested. The build quality looked pretty good (even if the cosmetics were kinda hideous). We arranged to try some of the gear (Mercenary was primarily in the vintage gear business at the time)...and the stuff was highly impressive. Mercenary was swiftly on the road to becoming the first dealer for Manley Labs on the East Coast (second in the United States). Over a decade later, EveAnna has revolutionized Manley Labs. "Hutch" is doing the design work (what can I say...I have infinite respect for guys with one name), and coming up with some remarkably refreshing and radical designs. The Manley Labs Massive Passive EQ is without a doubt the most revolutionary equalizer to hit the market since the original "ITI Parametric EQ". The Massive Passive's ability to use each band as either a variable slope 'shelving equalizer', or as a 'fully parametric' equalizer had never been done before. Coupling that innovative concept, with an exception sounding inductor based 'passive equalizer' design...with (of course) a tube gain make up amp is beyond clever, to the point of approaching genius (if you try the thing, you'll never be able to live without one again!!...there should be a "may be habit forming" warning label on the front of the unit). The Manley "SLAM" compressor/limiter with optional A-D/D-A...does everything but wash your car. The mic-pre's are rich and deep, the compressors [there are two stereo limiters] are exceptionally versatile and musical. The "VoxBox" and "Massive Passive" (both Hutch's designs) have proven that the end of the David Manley era of Manley Labs, was the beginning of continued growth and a commitment to push the limits of innovation. I can't see how the "SLAM" (words fail to illustrate just how much I hate that name... I wish they'd give it a corresponding number as well... or something) is equally mandatory as the Massive Passive to have in one's arsenal of weapons... if one is serious about winning the war. In the decade since Mercenary® and Manley Labs first met, their unit's cosmetics have become vastly superior (and their build quality is still second to none!!)...now if they would only stop calling their stuff by goofy names...
