Mercenary Audio
Josephson C617-SET

First you take a Microtech Gefell "test and measurement" capsule [the MK-221], then you screw the capsule onto the Josephson 617 amplifier body. Now sit back, close you're eyes and the audio will bring you right into the room with the performers!! The 617 amplifier is a very clear but highly musical amplifier which couples with the MT Gefell measurement capsule in a most remarkable manner. Most "measurement" mics are exceptionally cold and sterile sounding... not this one. It is accurate as all get out [its the mic we use with our analyzer to tune the main monitors in our studio] but at the same time has a full rich flavor that makes it absolutely perfect for recording everything from orchestras to drums to loud guitars, or fiddles, or mandolin, or piano, or anything else you can think of. Come to think of it, I don't know why we haven't tried it as a vocal mic... I bet it would work well in that application.

josephson c617 set features
The Josephson C617 is the second generation of our interchangeable capsule high voltage omni microphone, suitable for the most critical sound recording and measurement applications. It operates from standard P48 phantom power yet provides full 200 volt polarize potential for standard "half inch" microphone capsules from a variety of international manufacturers. Frequency response is flat +0, –1 dB from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The dynamic range is set by the limits of the physics of the microphone capsule and the electrical power available from a phantom power source. The microphone effectively contributes no noise to the self-generated noise of a typical halfinch or bigger capsule. Using a 50mV/Pa capsule like the Microtech Gefell MK221 shown, this results in an equivalent electronic noise level of less than 9 dB SPL, "A" weighted. The C617 has linear output up to about +9 dBV unloaded or about +7 dBV with a 1KΩ load, 20 Hz – 20 kHz. This corresponds to 127 dB SPL with a 50 mV/Pa capsule, or over 151 dB SPL with a 1/4" lab capsule. The Josephson cascode FET front end circuitry introduced in the C606 is further refined in the C617, combined with our traditional balanced bipolar class-A symmetrical output stage.

For music recording, these specifications together with a sub-micron thickness metal diaphragm capsule translate to the purest, most open sound possible. Pickup of sound pressure alone results in no proximity effect, very low sensitivity to wind noise and phase accuracy that cannot be obtained with directional microphones. Spot-miking applications or overall stereo pickups using spaced pairs take on a new level of detail and precision not possible with other types. The small capsule size results in a nearly perfect omnidirectional pattern for accurate pickup of the whole acoustic environment.

The C617 is suitable for use only with high voltage metal diaphragm instrumentation capsules such as Microtech Gefell, original Brüel & Kjaer, GRAS or ACO Pacific DC polarized types. A variety of these capsules are available from Josephson. Standard 0.460x60 threads are provided for "half inch" capsules. Other size capsules may be used with adapters. Low voltage or electret capsules should not be used with the C617.
