We've known Aspen and the folks at Groove Tubes for many years, but found what they stood for in 1996. During the 1996 AES show in Lost Angeles (yeah , the same one with the sculpture we were showing off a mic pre we had started to manufacture (which is another story...the short version is it was an excellent pre, but we had no business being in manufacturing!!). The pre, as damn near all do these days, had a "direct" input on it as well as being a mic-pre. Aspen dropped by the booth the day before the show started, said "Hi", and was checking out the mic-pre. The very next day, he showed up with a Fender Bass for us to plug into the DI input of the pre to show off the tone. Needless to say, with that one moment of kindness, it became apparent that Groove Tubes and Mercenary Audio would have a long relationship. There was the "dark period" of 'Groove Tubes' where they hooked up with the evil empire known as "Alesis"...but that soon ended as Alesis imploded and Aspen emerged from the wreckage with the ViPRE in tact. The result is a great sounding preamp, offering an unheard of degree of tonal control. Over 50 different tonal variations, designed to give you the best possible results from your entire mic collection. A couple of good microphones and a ViPRE may be all the small studio needs to get off the ground with as many tonal variations as possible, or exactly what the Doctor ordered for the traveling engineer who would like to find one unit that can create many different tones (rather than carrying five or six units to get different tonal colors. |
