The SMP500 preamplifier offers one of the cleanest, most neutral responses ever built for the 500-series format. When used in situations requiring high gain settings (e.g. using low-output ribbon microphones), the SMP-500 remains musical and void of any “sterility.” Derived from the well known SMP-2, this Class A, Discrete JFET circuit, provides more than enough clean, ultra low noise gain for any microphone, on any source, exhibiting nothing less than stellar results. The SMP-500 features rugged construction, and a 24 position stepped input pot with gain ranges between +8 and +64 DB of gain, so you won’t have to worry about it driving your low output ribbons and adding any unwanted noise or harmonic distortion of high frequency content. With input headroom for miles and a noise floor going into the basement, the transient life and accuracy of this module will never hinder, nor change the depth, tone and presence that your transducers can offer a source.
- SMP-500 circuitry features an all Class A discrete JFET front-end with a gain range of +8 to +64 dB in 24 switched steps.
- The output of the SMP-500 is fully balanced and floating, with a maximum output level of greater than +26 dBu.
- Front panel LED signal level indicators are provided to indicate 0 dBu output level (green) and output clipping (red). The clipping LED lights at +24 dBu output, which is about 2 dB before actual clipping.
- Polarity invert and P48 Phantom power switches with LED status indicators are also located on the front panel.
