One of the most overused and dangerous tools we have available to us as recording engineers are equalizers. One of the tools with the greatest creative possibilities is equalizers. One of the tools that really require you to listen to the sounds in the context of the music is equalizers. We can use them to carve up sounds and jam them into places they wouldn't ordinarily fit; we can use them "regionally" to bring up "air" or "thunder". We can get "surgical" and specific and carve up little pieces of midrange, notching a hole in one sound while accentuating that section of another is an age old tried and true tradition. Here you will find equalizers of all shapes and sizes. From the "clean and transparent" like a Speck ASC-T or GML 8200 to quasi-parametric character pieces like the Great River EQ-2NV, from graphic EQ's like the API 560 to "regional" EQ's like the D.W. Fearn VT-4 you'll find every available flavor and texture that can help make your recording jump to life. In our studio (The Methods and Applications Laboratory), we've put these puppies through their paces. We've tried to abuse them [and a few times succeeded!!], we've tried to do unmusical things with them (and a few times succeeded!!), but for the most part you will find on these pages a collection of invaluable tools to assist you in the definition of the character and depth of your music. If you need a hand with getting an overview of the character of these units, please feel free to shoot us an email at questions@mercenary.com and we'll do our level best to be of assistance. |
