Direct Injection [DI] boxes have been around for almost as long as recording. The character of a DI box can add fullness to your sound, get out of the way, or a combination of both. The ability to take an instruments "direct sound" and "inject" it to your recording system was thought to be a convenience that eliminated a lot of the variables of using a microphone" but as time marched on we had all kinds of designers with all kinds of ideas on how to improve on the concept. From DI"s that are simple transformers [not that any transformer is really simple] that converted the signal from "hi impedance/unbalanced" to a "balanced/lo impedance" signal to tube and solid state active circuits that output +4 line level eliminating the need for a mic amp. From mic pre"s that have a "DI" input on their front panel that employs the units input transformer to the transformerless, there is no shortage of viable "DI" options. We have collected a group of DI devices with differing forms and functions, all guaranteed to give your audio a unique tone and texture. Whether you"re recording a "63 P-bass with flatwound strings or the latest keyboard you"ll be able to find an appropriate texture to compliment the sound you"re recording in this rather comprehensive collection of tools. |
