Step one... record a piano. [We used KM-69's and an NPNG pre for this one.] (Raw piano sound sample) Step two... press the "listen" button on the face of the DerrEsser [all the LED's will light up], run the piano sound through the DerrEssers and return on two additional faders. Now sweep through the frequency range on the DerrEsser to find the high harmonics you would like to accentuate. (DerrEsser sweep sound sample) Step three... compress the snot out of the output of the DerrEsser [in this case we used the Dramastic Audio "Obsidian" with a fast attack and "auto" release at 10:1] (Compressed DerrEsser sound sample) Step four... blend the parallel return of the compressed DerrEsser signal with the dry piano. It's easy to use too much of the DerrEsser/compression effect so turn the effect on and off while you're getting the balance and you should be fine. (Final composite sound sample) |
