Coleman Audio switchers come in a wide, wide, wide variety of shapes and sizes. To hopefully demystify and help narrow down the kind of switcher you need here are a couple of pointers when making your selection... The "A" at the end of the model number means "active electronics" which means there are IC chips used in the unit... which means that the sound is passing through some electronics that may add some low level of noise or hiss (this is indicative of any piece of electronics equipment with an IC chip). Why would you want this? Well... simply put it's a matter of gain. For example, if you're running a -10dB setup (keyboards or semi-pro audio like that Tascam 4-track you can't seem to part with), you may need the active version to get more level. The passive unit (designated by the "P" at the end of the model number) will only get as loud as the incoming signal. The M3PH MK2, MS6A, MS8A and PS1A come equipped with the 1/4" headphone jack and dedicated volume pot. All other units do not have this option. The M3A MK2 and M3PH MK2 are the only switchers with left/right mute switches and a mono switch. The MS8A is the only switcher that has 1/4" TRS I/O connections; all other switchers have XLR I/O.
