When compromise just isn't an option, the equipment from Avalon Design is a wonderful choice. These high headroom, no holds barred devices can deliver the opulence of audio usually only found in far more expensive units. We've known Wynn Morro, Avalon's designer since 1994 when we found him shoved in a small corner booth at the AES show in San Francisco that year. At that time, the equipment was 'modular' [it fit into a master frame as opposed to being rack mountable] and ran fully 'Class A' on "80 volt rails". This was unheard of in 1994, and thrilled everyone at Mercenary to the core...80 volt rails!! Now that's "man sized headroom". The equipment sounded better than advertised, and we've been fans ever since. It was this line of open communication that led to the creation of the VT 737sm. Originally, there was the VT 737 and the VT 737sp. The VT 737sp had aluminum knobs and a higher headroom transformer on the microphone input. The VT 737 had butt ugly plastic purple knobs, and not quite as cool sounding microphone input transformer. Seeing as we had an ongoing relationship with Avalon Design, and Fletcher being a cheap son of a bitch...a deal was struck where Mercenary would buy the black plastic knobs (way cheaper per set than the aluminum knobs) and get the high headroom microphone input transformers (we could hear the difference in the transformer, but not the knob caps). We made the knobs black because, well, it looked cooler than the purple, and it also didn't create confusion with the units that didn't have the cooler mic input transformer. Avalon was nice enough to take it the step farther and make the face plates black with the gold nomenclature [Mercenary's colors are "Black and Gold"...yeah, it's sorta lame, but work with us...pimping gear isn't the worlds most exciting job, we've gotta grab fun where we can find it]. The knobs on the new version of the 737sm are similar to the knobs on the 'SP' version, except that they are matte black finish as opposed to chrome. They are a heavier, more substantial knob than the previous injected mold plastic version so they feel much better to the touch. This makes a cool thing even cooler! |
