OUR MINI-ME REVIEW Damn, we are all seriously impressed!! The mic pre is very open, and very clear sounding... but not sterile, boring, nor unexciting. The metering leaves a bit to be desired, but frankly there isn't a whole lot of real estate for meters with greater resolution. The Mix functions are pretty cool, as is the ability to go to pretty much any digital format that is a current standard, including a USB connection to your laptop or desktop computer!! What really knocked my socks off was the "Soft Limit" functions. I've never been a big fan of the Apogee 'Soft Limit", and I figured this to be no exception. Boy was I wrong!! The 'Soft Limit' itself is indeed soft, so caution is still required. However, they have added "Soft Limit Curves" which net you slight limiting, to some more noticeable limiting, to something I can only describe as being damn similar to the "Crush" mode on an Alan Smart C-2... this will suck up the sound of a gnat farting 50 ft. away from what you're recording. It's a no nonsense, hard-core (and rather pleasant sounding in that Ministry / Nine Inch Nails sort of way) brickwall limiter. This thing should be a serious winner with home enthusiasts, die hard professionals [including 'location field recordists'!!] and "Deadhead show tapers". Rarely have I been more impressed with a new product. --Fletcher |
